The Saddest Movie...

About four years ago, upon recommendation from a colleague, I started reading the book, "On the Beach" by Nevil Shute but I couldn't finish it because it made me just too sad.

Tonight I watched the movie version starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, and Anthony Perkins. I kept hoping the the ending I had presumed to be tragic would have a different result in the movie. I'll let you know, it isn't any different. It's a good movie, and even a better book, but I'm giving you fair warning, it's sad, sad, sad! What can be more tragic to us than the end of the entire human race? Sorry to bum you out so early into the spring season but some ideas are just that somber.

La Vie en Rose

Tonight I went to the neighbourhood theater and saw the Edith Piaf movie, La Vie En Rose. Firstly, I think it is wonderful to be able to say that there is a neighbourhood theatre; a small place, still clinging to its 1930's bones. Secondly, I'm pleased to say that the movie was very, very good. Not being in the know with the recent Oscar awards, I didn't realize that the movie did so well. What an extraordinary range for the lead actress, Marion Cotillard, to take the figure of Edith Piaf from a young woman to the final moments of her life. Two thumbs up!

They've Arrived

I was very excited this morning, to open the mailbox and find two packages containing the earrings I had ordered from whiteapple on Etsy.com. I can't decide which ones I like best.

Rooftop Birds in Galt, ON

Today, I was antique hunting with my mom in Galt, a town near Cambridge, ON. As we were finishing up, Mom spotted these pigeons atop the roof of a store named, Corner Games. We noticed how each bird perfectly fit on each roof tile and that the white bird stands out.

I Love Winter Storms

A perfect winter day...having the whole day to devote to shovelling. I love it all--the exercise, the beauty, tranquility.

Red Cardinals

I suppose all cardinals are red so the title here is stating the obvious. One of my favourite sights is of the neighbour's backyard birdfeeder. It's the epi-centre of action in my hood...for wildlife that is. The cats, squirrels, and various birds hang out all day and when the scene is really calm, up to 6 cardinals can be seen in the surrounding bushes. I'll have to get a shot of this myself but for now I've snagged a photo from elsewhere.

Remember to Drink Water

I never remember to drink water. Sometimes I wonder how I'm not suffering from dehydration. Anyways, upon recommendation from my brother, I've bought a fancy new water bottle from Sigg.

Coffee Shop

I'm at my fav coffee shop, trying to get to work. I'm lying really. I'm setting up this new blog. It's been while since I've done one of these as I deleted my old blog about 4 months ago. I've also brought along a stack of notebooks from my students that I intend to go through this weekend. Of course, as a supreme procrastinator, I might not get to them tonight.

I made my first online purchase this week, a pair of earrings from Etsy.com. The woman who made them is a talented artist. Her Etsy username is whiteapple and her blog is found at aforestofapples.blogspot.com/. Here's a pic of the earrings. Aren't they simple but beautiful?
